Not Just Art is a network of artists, cultural actors, and curatorial and artistic platforms working towards a more responsible and sustainable art economy. The starting point is a critique of private foundations that support cultural life and their financial investments in companies that profit from Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian territories and apartheid regime. This focus is the first step towards a more general awareness of the financial world's complicity in human rights violations around the world and its economic ties to private foundations in the cultural sector – and therefore also to us as cultural actors.
We are inspired by the Palestinian movement Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (the BDS Movement). We have joined the Apartheid Free Zone campaign and are now working toward establishing ourselves as the first Apartheid Free Zones in Denmark.
Furthermore, through various initiatives, we seek to deepen our understanding of the structures behind the economy that supported the artsand to gain a better insight into its effects and consequences in the world. We wish to communicate and discuss these issues in order to increase the transparency of and discussion about the economic connections of the arts and our shared responsibility and conditions. We have established this network to find more sustainable and equitable paths for the economy of art in Denmark and to create greater accountability for ourselves and the actors in the field, including institutions and private foundations. It is a structural change in practice we are working towards.
We will organize various events, including AFZ teach-ins and public presentations. We are very interested in collaborating with other actors, organisations and professional fields, and we hope you will reach out with cases, proposals, and/or contributions toward joint mobilization.
We are an open network and everyone is invited to take part.
